Mixed doubles specialist Lilyana tops popularity poll

MIXED doubles specialist Lilyana Natsir came out tops in the women’s category of a 24-hour online fan poll carried out by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently.
Asked what he thought about it during the Super Series Masters Finals, her partner Tantowi Ahmad was quick to quip: “It is because of her beautiful face.”
The fair-skinned Lilyana blushed but said: “I was quite surprised with the outcome of the fan poll.
“It was an honour to find out that I have a big following. I think the big support is because of my good results in the mixed doubles.
“I did well with my former partner Nova Widianto and I have also produced good results with my new partner Ahmad for over a year now.”
The 26-year-old Lilyana, who won two world titles with Nova, teamed up with Ahmad in 2010 and they are already the world No. 4 and have six Open titles.
Lilyana said the mixed doubles field has become very competitive – especially with the sudden rise of Jaochim Fisher Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark this year.
“There was a time when we were at the top but now the Danish pair are riding high.
“What really matters is for us to peak at the right time, during the Olympic Games in London,” said Lilyana.
Ahmad-Lilyana went down fighting 21-17, 7-21, 20-22 to China’s Xu Chen-Ma Jin in a Group A match yesterday but they can still make it to the semi-finals if they beat China’s Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei today.
